No doubt there will be a wealth of additional content released to support this title over the years. Anyone upgrading from the Sims 2 may initially feel disappointed by the comparative lack of things to do, but this soon dissipates as you realise exactly how much smoother it plays.

Many of the features from the previous game are missing, such as pets and changing seasons, but the first sequel was bolstered by years' worth of expansion packs. The developers may have taken time to address which areas of The Sims 2 they could build upon, but when measured up against its predecessor, The Sims 3 looks a little light on content. The developers' intention was clearly to make this every inch a Sims title, both visually and sonically, with characters still retaining their cartoony appearance and conversing in their quirky simlish dialect. As with any sequel worth its salt, the graphics and sounds have been tweaked, but it's hardly an overhaul. The sims themselves have also received a facelift, though nothing major. While it is easier to customise your home and rearrange the furniture accordingly, EA has managed to cram in a dozen more features, with the option to change the colour and material texture of every object in your home. Strips of fat have also been trimmed from the game's interface. This is the key to keeping them content, rather than taking responsibility for the tedium of satisfying their every whim. When fulfilling these wishes, your sim's mood is enhanced for a limited length of time. This can include something as trivial as sitting on the couch to taking a creative writing course. Throughout the game, your sims will let you know what they most desire via a thought bubble above their heads.

Tending to your sims' every need isn't as much of a chore in this edition thanks to the inclusion of mood boosts. Some shrewd streamlining has been applied to the wants and needs mechanic, allowing for a smoother gameplay experience. It also has great implications for the way your sims interact with the world around them, making it far easier to just stroll out of the house and engage in activities at the click of a button. Not only does this eliminate tedious loading times, it also gives rise to a pleasant sense of community and there are no disruptions in time. Unlike the previous games, this one takes the sandbox approach, setting the game in one integrated location.

The Sims 3's most significant enhancement is arguably its unified world. For instance, a creative sim may pursue a career in the arts, while an evil one will likely have aspirations for world domination. It was always difficult to figure out exactly what bearing these points would have on the way things pan out, but with traits it is abundantly clear. The traits system replaces the personality points mechanic of The Sims 2, and represents a vast improvement on its predecessor. Positive traits, like ambitious, will help them excel in their careers, while negative ones like clumsy are just plain hilarious. It's very gratifying to watch your sim's life unfold in accordance to the traits you have selected for them. There are so many to choose from, including creative, bookworm, athletic, childish and evil. Facial features, garments and body type can be all be fine-tuned to a greater extent this time around, but perhaps the most significant addition is the option to select up to five character traits to define your sims' personality. Your first task is to customise your sims, and there are more options than ever before. Keeping your characters happy, while making sure their household and relationships are functioning smoothly is not unlike tending to an array of spinning plates while riding a unicycle but it can be a hell of a lot of fun.

An overhaul here, some streamlining there and we have a successful marriage of old and new. With the sheer volume of expansion packs released for the first game and its sequel, you might wonder what avenues are left for The Sims 3 to explore, but the developers still have a few tricks up their sleeves. It seems like we've been bombarded with Sims content over the last decade, but EA aren't quite done yet.
